Welcome to Autumn Term 2026!

Below is an overview of what we will be working on in Autumn Term in each area of the curriculum.

 Literacy

One of our key texts this term will be the story ‘Old Bear’.

We will be using this text to focus on:

• Writing sentences using a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop. 

• Asking questions and making predictions

• Sequencing key events

• Using the conjunction 'and’ and ‘because” 

• Using descriptive vocabulary to describe characters and settings

Read Write Inc

Children will attend their daily phonics groups based on their most recent assessment. During sessions, they will continue to develop their knowledge and application of phonics in both reading and spelling. They will read a variety of stories, specifically tailored to them, alongside their peers in paired reading activities.

Children who have come off the phonics programme will focus on developing their knowledge of common spelling rules and will be challenged to answer a range of comprehension questions linked to their texts. 

Maths

This half term, the children will develop their mathematical understanding through place value within 10, addition and subtraction within 10 and shape. The children will then use their knowledge to solve simple addition and subtraction problems within 10, using practical resources, pictures and number sentences to support their thinking. They will also explore common 2D and 3D shapes, learning to recognise and name them and describe their properties using mathematical vocabulary. 

Science

This half term, the children will learn all about materials in Science. They will explore a range of everyday materials, such as wood, metal, plastic, glass, paper and fabric, and learn to identify and describe their different properties. The children will investigate which materials are best suited for particular purposes and explore how materials can be changed, for example by bending, stretching, squashing and twisting. Through practical investigations and experiments, they will develop their scientific vocabulary, make predictions, observe carefully and begin to explain what they have discovered. 

Art

This half term, the children will explore self-portraits in Art. They will learn about the famous artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo, who is well known for creating imaginative portraits using objects such as fruits, vegetables and flowers. The children will look closely at Arcimboldo’s artwork and explore how he used shapes, colours and different objects to create faces. They will then use their own ideas to create self-portraits, developing their drawing skills and experimenting with different materials and techniques. 

History/ Geography

This half term the children will be learning History. They will learn about Toys from the past and compare them to the present. Children will bring in their favourite toy and we will discuss what it is made of and why they like it. We will then compare their toys to those of their grandparents and look at how toys have changed over time, 

PE

This half term, the children will develop their fundamental movement skills in 

PE. They will practise and develop skills such as running, jumping, balancing, hopping, skipping and changing direction. Through a range of fun and active games, the children will work on their coordination, agility, balance and control. They will also learn how to move safely in different spaces, work cooperatively with others and begin to apply their movement skills in different activities and challenges.

RE 

This half term, the children will learn about the Christian Creation Story in RE. They will explore the biblical story of how God created the world and discuss the different stages of creation. The children will think about why Christians believe the world is special and why it is important to care for God’s creation. Through stories, discussions and creative activities, the children will develop their understanding of Christian beliefs and begin to make connections between the Creation Story and how Christians live their lives today. 

Music

In music, the children will focus on learning to listen. Children will sing, feel the pulse of music, finding rhythms and play untuned instruments in time to the beat

Languages

Children will be learning Spanish with Mrs Clark this half term. Topics will include greetings, family members, colours and animals.
