Spring 1 Overview

Welcome to Spring Term 2026!

The children worked so hard last term and we are looking forward to seeing them progress further still in the term ahead. Below is an overview of what we will be working on in the upcoming term in each area of the curriculum.
 
Literacy
One of our key texts this term will be the magical story 'Bog Baby'.
We will be using this text to focus on:
  • Using descriptive vocabulary to describe characters and settings
  • Asking questions and making predictions
  • Sequencing key events and using paragraphs to structure our writing
  • Using conjunctions; 'and, but, because, when, so' to extend our sentences
  • Refining our handwriting and word spacing 
  • Spelling words correclty using common suffixes including; -ed -ing -ful
  • Developing our use of punctuation to create effect (for example using exclamation marks)
 
Read Write Inc
Children will continue to attend their daily phonics groups based on their most recent assessment. During sessions they will continue to develop their knowledge and application of phonics in both reading and spelling. They will read a variety of stories, specifically tailored to them, alonside their peers in paried reading activities.
Children who have come off the phonics programme will focus on developing their knowledge of common spelling rules and will be challenged to answer a range of comprehension questions linked to their texts. 
 
Maths
In maths the children will be reviewing concepts on writing and counting money in addition to extending their knowledge of how to represent money using pounds and pence.  They will be required to select the correct coins to make various totals, look at different ways of making the same amount as well as how to exchange money.
We will also be looking at multiplaction and division and learning how these two operations are related to each other. The children will draw upon their knowledge of counting in 2's, 5's and 10's to solve multiplication and division problems. 
 
Science
This half term the children will be learning about different types of plants, flowers, trees and bushes. They will find out about what plants need to survive and how some plants have adapted to thrive in extreme habitats.  They will also look at healthy eating and how we can take care of ourselves through diet, execise and good hygiene. 


RE 
This term will be learning about Judaism. The children will be learning how celebrating Passover helps Jews show God they value their special relationship with Him. 
  
DT
In DT we will be designing, making and evaluating Chinese style Willow Pattern Plates as well as making our own model Bog Babies using clay and paints. 
 
PE
In PE, we are focusing on developing the children's gymnastics skills and learning about invasion games.
 
Music
The children will be focusing on the Rock song 'I Wanna Play In A Band' written especially for children. In this song the children will learn about singing and playing together in an ensemble.
