Greasby Infant School - Spring 1 Overview

Spring 1 Overview

Welcome to Spring Term 2026!

The children worked so hard last term, and we are looking forward to seeing them progress further still in the term ahead. Below is an overview of what we will be working on in the upcoming term in each area of the curriculum.

Literacy

One of our key texts this term will be the interesting story of ‘Hermelin’ the detective mouse.

We will be using this text to focus on:

  • Using descriptive vocabulary to describe characters and settings
  • Asking questions and making predictions
  • Sequencing key events
  • Using the conjunction 'and’
  • Refining our handwriting and word spacing
  • Spelling words correctly using common suffixes such as -ed, -er, and -est and prefixes such as -un.
  • Developing our use of punctuation, such as using a question mark.

Read Write Inc

Children will continue to attend their daily phonics groups based on their most recent assessment. During sessions they will continue to develop their knowledge and application of phonics in both reading and spelling. They will read a variety of stories, specifically tailored to them, alongside their peers in paired reading activities.

Children who have come off the phonics programme will focus on developing their knowledge of common spelling rules and will be challenged to answer a range of comprehension questions linked to their texts.

Maths

In Maths this half term, children will revisit and strengthen their understanding of place value with numbers up to 20. They will learn to identify how many tens and ones make each number. Pupils will also develop their addition and subtraction skills within 20, drawing on their prior knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help them secure number bonds to 20. As the term progresses, children will explore doubles and near doubles before moving on to further subtraction work, building confidence and fluency in their early number skills.

Science

This half term, children will be learning about animals, including humans. They will explore five different animal groups and discover the key characteristics that help classify animals into each group. As part of their learning, children will take part in an exciting ZooLab workshop, where they will have the opportunity to see and handle a variety of animals linked directly to their learning, helping to bring science to life.

 Art

In Art this half term, children will learn about the abstract artists Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky. They will explore how colour, shape and line can be used to express emotions, before experimenting with a range of media to create their own artwork inspired by these artists.

Geography

This half term in Geography, children will be learning about the United Kingdom and the seas that surround it. They will identify the four countries of the UK and explore key geographical features, developing their map skills and understanding of where they live in the wider world.

History

In History, children will explore technological artefacts from the past and present. They will learn how everyday objects have changed over time and discuss how technology helps us in our daily lives, developing an understanding of the past through hands-on investigation and discussion.

PE

In PE, we are focusing on developing the children's gymnastics skills and learning about invasion games.

RE

This term in RE, children will be learning about Christianity, focusing on Jesus as a friend. They will explore key Bible stories including Zacchaeus, Jesus Calms the Storm, and Mary and Martha, helping them to understand kindness, friendship and how Jesus showed care for others.
