Spring 2 Overview

Welcome to Spring Term 2026!

The children worked so hard during the first part of the spring term. Below is an overview of what we will be working on in the upcoming term in each area of the curriculum.

Literacy

One of our key texts this term will be the interesting story of ‘Where the Wild Things Are”

We will be using this text to focus on:

  • Using descriptive vocabulary to describe characters and settings
  • Asking questions and making predictions
  • Sequencing key events
  • Using the conjunction 'and’
  • Refining our handwriting and word spacing
  • Spelling words correctly using common suffixes such as -ed, -er, and -ing.
  • Developing our use of punctuation, such as using a question mark.

Read Write Inc

Children will continue to attend their daily phonics groups based on their most recent assessment. During sessions they will continue to develop their knowledge and application of phonics in both reading and spelling. They will read a variety of stories, specifically tailored to them, alongside their peers in paired reading activities.

Children who have come off the phonics programme will focus on developing their knowledge of common spelling rules and will be challenged to answer a range of comprehension questions linked to their texts.

Maths

In Maths this half term, children will continue to develop their addition and subtraction skills within 20, drawing on their prior knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help them secure number bonds to 20. Children will strengthen their understanding of place value with numbers up to 50. They will learn to identify how many tens and ones make each number. As the term progresses, children will begin looking at measurement. This will involve comparing lengths and heights and measuring lengths using objects.

Science

This half term, children will continue to learn about animals, including humans. Children will be looking at the human body, including body parts and looking at the 5 senses through exciting experiments.

 DT

In DT this half term, children will be creating sock puppets inspired by their literacy story ‘Where the Wild Things Are'. Children will be exposed to different puppets and explore the most suitable materials to use to help them plan and make one. They will then evaluate their sock puppet.

Geography

This half term in Geography, children will be learning about the weather. This will include weather symbols, going outside to investigate the weather and creating their own weather diaries.

History

In History, children will be looking at the history of space travel, including key individuals like Tim Peake and Helen Sharman.

PE

In PE, we are focusing on developing the children's gymnastics skills and Dance.

RE

This term in RE, children will be learning about Christianity. Children will focus on the question Why was Jesus welcomed like a king or celebrity by the crowds on Palm Sunday?”
