Summer 1 Overview

Welcome to Summer Term 2026!

 

The children worked so hard last term, and we are looking forward to seeing them progress further still in the term ahead. Below is an overview of what we will be working on in the upcoming term in each area of the curriculum.

 

Literacy

One of our key texts this term will be the interesting story of ‘The secret of black rock”

We will be using this text to focus on...

Using descriptive vocabulary to describe characters and settings

  Asking questions and making predictions

Sequencing key events

 Using the conjunction 'and’ and ‘because”

 Refining our handwriting and word spacing 

Spelling words correctly using common suffixes such as -ed, -er, and -ing.

Developing our use of punctuation, such as using a question mark.

 

Read Write Inc

Children will continue to attend their daily phonics groups based on their most recent assessment. During sessions, they will continue to develop their knowledge and application of phonics in both reading and spelling. They will read a variety of stories, specifically tailored to them, alongside their peers in paired reading activities.

Children who have come off the phonics programme will focus on developing their knowledge of common spelling rules and will be challenged to answer a range of comprehension questions linked to their texts. 

 

Maths

In Maths this half term, children will be learning about multiplication and division, using practical resources, arrays and repeated addition. Children will also begin to learn about fractions, understanding that fractions are equal parts. Children will use practical and pictorial representations to support their learning.

 

Science

This term in Science, Year 1 children are learning about plants. They will explore the different parts of a plant including roots, stems, leaves and flowers, and learn about the role each part plays in helping the plant grow and survive. The children will also identify and name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including trees, and begin to understand the differences between them. The children will be observing plants closely and growing their own!

 

 Art

Children will be learning about Aboriginal art and Australian animals. Children will learn about the artist Katrina Tjitayi and take inspiration from her work to create their own.

 

Geography

This half term in Geography, children will be learning about Hot and Cold places. They will be able to look at different landscapes and identify whether they are in hot or cold regions. They will also know where hot and cold places are located on the globe.

 

History

In History the children will learn about Grace Darling. They will learn the history of Grace Darling and how she rescued people from the sea when she spotted them from her lighthouse. Children will learn how this was the early story of how the RNLI came to be developed. They will make comparisons to boats then and now.

 

PE

In PE, we are focusing on developing the children's gymnastics skills and Dance. Outside the children are also learning some tennis skills with Mr Lewis.

 

RE 

In RE this term, Year 1 children will be learning about Judaism, with a focus on the special day of Shabbat. They will explore why Shabbat is important to Jewish people and how it is celebrated each week, including traditions such as lighting candles, sharing a special meal and spending time with family. The children will begin to understand the meaning behind these practices and reflect on the importance of rest, family and celebration in their own lives.

Music

In music, the children will focus on learning to listen. Children will sing, feel the pulse of music, finding rhythms and play untuned instruments in time to the beat.
